WooCommerce product SEO: the title and description in Google, with templates for three store types
WooCommerce product SEO starts with two short texts: the title and description that Google shows in results. You set them in an SEO plugin, such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math. For hundreds of products, use a good template, and for your best sellers write the title and description by hand: the name and a specific feature in the title, the benefit in the description.

What Google shows about a product
In a search result the customer sees the title (meta title), the address and the description (meta description). The title usually fits around 60 characters, the description around 150 to 160, and longer ones get cut. Google treats both as suggestions: it may build its own title or pick a description from the page content. The rules are described in the guide to title links in search results and a separate one on snippets.
This post is only about what shows in Google. We have gathered the general rules for writing descriptions in results, for posts and pages too, in the guide on the meta description in WordPress. What the customer reads on the product page is covered separately in the guide on WooCommerce product descriptions.
There are three common problems in WooCommerce stores. The title is just the wholesaler's name, for example “LMP-SOL-K20-WH Solar lamp”. There is no description, so Google takes a random fragment of the page, sometimes a sentence about delivery costs. Or every product has the same template description, differing only in the name.
Template or by hand
Yoast SEO and Rank Math let you set a title and description template for all products at once, with variables the plugin replaces with the product's data. In Rank Math this is done in the titles and meta settings for products, and the list of variables, including SKU and brand, is in the Rank Math knowledge base. In Yoast you change templates in the content type settings, as described in Yoast's help on templates.
| SEO plugin template | By hand for a product | |
|---|---|---|
| How much work | one setting for the whole store | each product separately |
| Quality | correct, but repetitive | specific, with a feature and a benefit |
| Keeping it current | variables update themselves | fixed text, you have to watch the price |
| Who it suits | the long tail, hundreds of products | bestsellers and products in ads |
A sensible split: a template for everything, handwritten texts for the products that sell best or get the most traffic.
Patterns for three store types
The patterns are examples. Adapt them to your store, and leave the store name out of the title if the SEO plugin adds it by itself.
Home and garden (retail). The customer is looking for a solution, not a product code.
- Title: the product name, the most important feature, sometimes the size. “Kula solar lantern 20 cm, white, no cables”.
- Description: the customer's situation and the benefit, then a fact. “A sphere that lights up by itself at dusk. Set it on a flower bed or patio, it charges from the sun and shines for up to 8 hours.”
Workwear and business supplies (B2B). The customer knows the specs and wants specifics.
- Title: product type, standard or material, size, pack. “Nitrile work gloves, size 9, 12 pairs”.
- Description: use, specs, and the purchase terms you really offer. “Nitrile gloves for assembly and warehouse work. Pack of 12 pairs, VAT invoice, dispatched from our own warehouse.”
Furniture and pricier products. The customer compares and needs a reason to click on you in particular.
- Title: the model name, type, key feature. “Lena sofa, 3-seater, sofa bed, velvet fabric”.
- Description: dimensions, choice, service. “3-seater sofa bed with storage. 12 velvet colours, 218 × 92 cm, delivery to the room of your choice.”
A few rules shared by all of them:
- The most important word at the start of the title, because the end sometimes gets cut.
- One description per product. Google is less likely to show repetitive descriptions.
- No hard-coded prices or promotion dates.
- No promises you can't keep, for example “24 h dispatch” if that isn't always the case.
- No product codes in the title, unless customers really search for them, as in B2B.
Before and after: what a batch fix looks like
For batch work there is a ready task, “Product descriptions and SEO in batches”, in the TellMyShop plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce. Your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) looks for products without a meta description and starts with those that sold best in the last 90 days. It shows 2 or 3 samples, and once you accept the style it works in batches of up to 50 products. The save goes into the active SEO plugin: Yoast SEO or Rank Math. If you have neither, TellMyShop saves the texts in its own fields and displays them on the page itself.
You: Fill in the titles and descriptions in Google for products in the Lanterns category. No store name, Yoast adds it by itself.
Your chat: 24 of 38 lanterns have no meta description, 9 have a title with the product code. Three samples:
You: The description is a bit short, add something about rain.
Your chat: The corrected version has 152 characters and mentions that it is rainproof. After your ‘yes’ I'll prepare a preview of the whole batch, 33 products.
Kula solar lantern 20 cm
old version: Title: LMP-SOL-K20-WH Solar lamp (25 chars)
new version: Title: Kula solar lantern 20 cm, white, no cables (42 chars)
old version: Description: (empty)
new version: Description: A sphere that lights up by itself at dusk. Set it on a flower bed or patio, it charges from the sun and shines for up to 8 hours. (129 chars)
The preview shows every title and description as “before, after” with the character count. It warns when a title is shorter than 25 or longer than 65 characters, and a description shorter than 70 or longer than 165. The chat also warns when two SEO plugins are active in the store at once, because the page may then show texts from the other one. In this task the chat does not change prices, names or product addresses. An empty title means falling back to the SEO plugin's template. After saving, the chat can check the product page the way Google sees it and confirm that the new title really shows. If the store uses a cache, the old title may be visible until it is cleared.
In the free TellMyShop Free the chat goes through the products and shows the gaps: empty, repeated and overlong titles and descriptions, with a plan of fixes. Saving with a preview, your agreement and undo from the change history works in TellMyShop Pro. Better titles don't guarantee a position in Google. They make the result clearer and easier to choose. You will find the details on the TellMyShop for WordPress and WooCommerce page, and prices on the pricing page.
What else affects a product's result
The title and description are only part of it. Google may show stars, price and availability in the result based on the product structured data, which WooCommerce or an SEO plugin adds. Whether it shows them is Google's decision. Categories with a good description help Google understand the whole catalogue, which we write about in the post on the WooCommerce category description. If the product isn't in the store or in Google at all, start with the guide for when a product is not showing in WooCommerce. You will find more posts on the blog.
Questions and answers
Where do I set a product's title and description in Google?
In the SEO plugin, on the product edit screen. In Yoast SEO it is the section with a Google result preview below the product description, in Rank Math the plugin's panel while editing. Without an SEO plugin WordPress shows the product name and store name by itself, and Google picks the description from the page content.
Should I put the price in a product's meta description?
Better not to hard-code it. The price changes, and an old description with a different amount stays in Google until the robot's next visit. If you want the price in the result, use a variable in the SEO plugin's template or the product structured data, which update themselves.
Why does Google show a different title from the one I set?
Google treats the page title as a suggestion. When the title is too long, repeats across many pages or describes the page poorly, Google may build its own, for example from the H1 heading. A short title with the product name and one specific feature usually stays as it is.
Isn't a Yoast or Rank Math template enough?
A template is a good base for hundreds of products, because no field is left empty. But it gives almost identical descriptions that differ only in the name. It is worth writing your own title and description for the best-selling products and leaving the rest to the template.
How is product SEO different from the product description?
The product description is read by the customer on the product page, in the store. The title and description in Google are seen by someone who is still choosing a search result. The first has to convince them to buy, the second to click, which is why they have different lengths and different rules.
Will TellMyShop change product titles in Google without an SEO plugin?
Yes. When there is no Yoast SEO or Rank Math, the TellMyShop plugin saves the title and description in its own fields and displays them on the product page itself. When an SEO plugin is installed, the changes go into its fields.
