Excluded by noindex tag in WordPress: three places where noindex hides
“Excluded by noindex tag” in Search Console means the page asks Google to leave it out of results, and Google has done so. In WordPress, noindex usually comes from one of three places: the search engine visibility option in Settings, the SEO plugin field on the post, or the settings for a whole content type in the SEO plugin.

First: is it a problem at all
Start with the list of addresses, not with fixing. In Search Console, open the Pages report in the Indexing section, scroll to the table of reasons and click the noindex row. The report is described in Search Console Help.
The list usually holds two groups of addresses. The first is pages meant to stay out of Google. The second is mistakes. Only the second needs action.
| Address on the list | Usually a mistake? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| author archive, date archive | no, SEO plugins often exclude them | leave it |
| tag page with a single post | usually not | leave it or tidy up the tags |
| cart, checkout, my account (WooCommerce) | no | leave it |
| thank-you page after a form | no | leave it |
| test page, draft copied as a page | no | leave it or delete the page |
| service page, About, Contact | yes | remove noindex |
| guide post meant to bring traffic | yes | remove noindex |
| shop product or category page | yes | remove noindex |
| every address on the site at once | yes | check the visibility option in Settings |
If the list holds mostly pages from the top of the table, Search Console is simply showing your settings. When there is a page among them that is meant to earn money, keep looking.
Three places where noindex hides
Check them in this order, from the broadest to the narrowest.
- Settings → Reading, the “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” box. When it is ticked, the whole site gets noindex. Developers tick it during the build and forget to untick it. If almost every address of your site is in the report, it is nearly certainly this box.
- The SEO plugin field on a single post or page. In Yoast SEO it is in the advanced section of the panel below the content, in the question of whether search engines may show this content. In Rank Math it is in the Advanced tab, in the Robots Meta section, and the tab only appears in the plugin's advanced mode. Rank Math describes this in its article on the Advanced tab.
- Content type or taxonomy settings in the SEO plugin. Yoast and Rank Math let you set noindex for all pages, all posts or all categories at once. In Rank Math this is part of Titles & Meta. The field on a single post then shows the default value, yet noindex is there anyway, because it comes from the general settings.
Less often, noindex comes from a fourth place: the theme, another plugin or an X-Robots-Tag header sent by the server. You won't see that kind of noindex in any field in the admin. Google describes the mechanism and both methods, the tag and the header, in its guide to blocking indexing with noindex.
How to find where the noindex on one page comes from
The admin shows settings, while Google reads the finished page. So first look at what Google sees.
Enter the address in the URL Inspection bar in Search Console and run the live test. In the indexing section you will see whether the noindex is in a meta tag or in the response header. The other way is to open the page in a private window, view the source and search for the word “noindex”.
Then match the result to the places on the list:
- Noindex in the tag, whole site: Settings → Reading.
- Noindex in the tag, this page only: the SEO plugin field on the post, then the content type settings.
- Noindex in the response header: the server, a security plugin or a cache plugin. This usually needs your host or your developer.
- No noindex in the source, but the live test shows it: a cached page. Clear the cache and check again.
After the fix
Removing noindex does not bring the page back to Google straight away. After the change, request indexing in URL Inspection and make sure the page has a link from the menu or from other posts. The status in the Pages report changes with a delay, sometimes a few days, sometimes longer.
If noindex was not the cause and the page still isn't in results, go to the guide WordPress site not showing in Google, where we cover the other causes. For a new site, the checklist in how to add a WordPress site to Google will also help.
How the chat finds the source of noindex
The TellMyShop plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce has a task called “Why can't this page be seen”. You give the address or title, and your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) checks the site visibility option, the SEO plugin field on the content and the live page, with headers and the response code. At the end it tells you where the noindex comes from and what needs to change.
You: Search Console says the Garden design page is excluded by the noindex tag. Where did that come from?
Your chat: I've checked the page the way Google sees it. The noindex is in a meta tag, not in a server header. The site as a whole is visible to search engines. Source: the Rank Math field on this one page, set by hand.
You: Change it.
Your chat: The preview is ready, I'm changing only this one field. I'll save it after your ‘yes’. Then request indexing of this address in Search Console.
I suggest changing the search engine settings for this page:
old version: noindex, follow
new version: index, follow
The names and settings in this conversation are illustrative.
You get the diagnosis in the free TellMyShop Free: the chat reads the site, points to the place and tells you what to change, and you make the fix yourself in the editor. In TellMyShop Pro the chat removes noindex from a post, page, product or category in the same conversation, straight after you activate the licence. It always shows a preview first, and the change goes into the history, where you can undo it.
Two cases need a switch in the plugin panel. The chat will change the visibility option in the Reading settings after you turn on the Theme switch, and the general content type settings in the SEO plugin after you turn on the Plugins switch. Both work for 24 hours and require a database backup from today. The chat will detect noindex in a server header, but removing it is usually a job for your host.
What the plugin won't do: it won't click “Request indexing” in Search Console for you or speed up Google's decision. You will find the details on the TellMyShop for WordPress and WooCommerce page and prices in the pricing. There are more guides on the blog.
Questions and answers
What does “Excluded by noindex tag” mean in Search Console?
Google visited the page and found a request on it not to show it in results. It honoured the request, so the page is not in the index. Nothing is broken: the status comes from a setting on your site, intended or not.
Does every page with this status need fixing?
No. The list often includes pages that are meant to stay out of Google, such as author archives, tag pages with a single post, the cart, the customer account or a thank-you page. You fix only the addresses that should bring in people from search.
How do I remove noindex in Yoast SEO?
Open the post or page, go to the advanced section of the Yoast SEO panel and set it so search engines may show this content in results. If the field is on the default value and noindex is still there, check the settings for that content type in the Yoast settings.
I removed noindex, but the status in Search Console does not change. Why?
Google has to visit the page again, and the report updates with a delay. Check the address with the URL Inspection tool and request indexing. If the live test still shows noindex, look at the page cache or the server headers.
Will TellMyShop Free remove noindex?
No, the free version only reads. The chat in TellMyShop Free checks the page the way Google sees it and tells you where the noindex comes from. TellMyShop Pro removes noindex from a post or page, after a preview and your approval.
