WooCommerce product not showing: one product, a category or the whole store
A WooCommerce product is not showing most often for one of five reasons: it is not published, its catalog visibility is hidden, it has no stock while out-of-stock hiding is on, it has no category, or the whole store is in coming soon mode. Before you start searching, work out the scale: one product, one category or the whole store is missing.

How many products disappeared? Three ways to search
Each scale has different causes, so it is worth starting with one question. Open the store in a private browser window, without logging in. A logged-in administrator sees more than a customer, for example private products, so checking from the admin often leads you astray.
| What you see | Where to look | Most common cause |
|---|---|---|
| One product is missing, the others are there | that product's page in the admin | status, catalog visibility, stock, category |
| A category is empty or incomplete | the product list of that category | products without a category, out-of-stock hiding |
| The store is empty, but the products are in the admin | WooCommerce settings | coming soon mode, wrong shop page, cache |
| The product is in the store, but not in Google | SEO plugin settings | noindex, canonical URL, a new product |
The last row is a separate matter: the store works, only the search engine does not show the product. We come back to it at the end.
One product is missing: the order to check
First type the product's direct address in a private window. If the page opens, the product exists and the problem lies in the store's lists. If you see a 404 error, the product is not publicly available.
- Status. In Products > All Products check the status column. Draft, “Pending Review”, private or scheduled for a future date means the customer will not see the product.
- Catalog visibility. On the product page, in the Publish box, click Edit next to “Catalog visibility”. Only “Shop and search results” gives full visibility. “Hidden” means the product only works at its direct address.
- Stock. If stock is zero and the store hides out-of-stock products, the product disappears from lists and search. This setting applies to the whole store and is described in the WooCommerce product settings documentation.
- Price. A variable product where no enabled variation has a price cannot be bought. With out-of-stock hiding on, it may also disappear from the list.
- Category. A product only in the default “Uncategorized” category will not appear where customers look for it.
- Password. A password-protected product shows only the password form.
Catalog visibility confuses many owners, because “Hidden” does not mean “private”. Anyone with the link can still open the product page. A guide to hidden WooCommerce products explains this well.
An empty or incomplete category
When a few products are missing from a category, check them against the list in the previous section, but start with two things shared by many products at once.
The first is assignment. An import from a wholesaler or a CSV file often leaves products in “Uncategorized”. In Products > All Products you can filter the list by category and see how many are sitting there.
The second is out-of-stock hiding. If half the category is sold out and this option is on, the category looks empty, even though the products are in the admin.
Block themes have a third cause. The product list on a page can be built by a block with its own filters, for example set to featured products only or to one category. Then the products are fine, and the list only shows a selection. You fix such a block in Appearance > Editor, in that page's template.
The whole store is empty
Usually one setting is to blame, and the products are fine.
- Coming soon mode. Newer WooCommerce versions have a toggle in WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility. The “Coming soon” setting hides the store or the whole site from visitors who are not logged in. Details are in the coming soon mode documentation.
- The shop page. WooCommerce product settings point to the page that should be the product list. After an import or a theme change, the wrong page is sometimes selected.
- Cache. A cache plugin or the server may show an old, empty version of the page. Clear the cache in the plugin or ask your host to do it.
- The last change. A new filter or multilingual plugin, or a theme update, can break the product list. This path is best worked through with the person who looks after the site.
How the chat checks why a product isn't showing
The TellMyShop plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce has a ready task, “Why isn't this page visible”. You give the product name, SKU or address, and your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) checks everything in the table above in one pass. It works in TellMyShop Free, because the diagnosis only reads the store. At the top of the answer you get the most likely cause, below it a list of “checked, fine” and “problem, how to fix”.
The diagnosis covers status, password, catalog visibility, stock together with the out-of-stock hiding setting, price including variations, categories, coming soon mode, and for Google: noindex, canonical URL, robots.txt, the sitemap and the page's response code checked live, the way a guest who is not logged in sees it. It also counts internal links to the product and checks whether it is in the menu.
You: Why isn't the Kula 20 cm solar lantern in the store? A customer says she can't find it.
Your chat: I checked the product. The most likely cause: catalog visibility is set to “Hidden”. The product page works at its direct address, but it is not in the Lanterns list or in the store search. Status, price (€89) and stock (14 pcs) are fine.
You: Fix it.
Your chat: Preview of the change for Kula 20 cm solar lantern:
I'll save it after your ‘yes’. You can undo the change from the change history.
old version: Catalog visibility: hidden
new version: Catalog visibility: shop and search results
In TellMyShop Pro the chat fixes what lives in the product itself: status, catalog visibility and categories. You see every change in a preview before it is saved, and you can undo most of them from the change history. Stock and prices need the Sales switch, which stays off in the plugin until you turn it on yourself. In this task the chat does not change WooCommerce's own settings, such as coming soon mode or out-of-stock hiding. It tells you where to click. Clearing the server cache stays with your host. Read more about the plugin on the TellMyShop for WordPress and WooCommerce page, and licence prices are on the pricing page.
The product is in the store, but not in Google
This is a different problem from an empty store. The most common reasons are a “noindex” setting in Yoast or Rank Math on the product itself or for all products, a canonical URL pointing to another page, and plain time: a new product can wait a few days or longer to be indexed. Yoast's help on noindex shows what the indexing settings look like in Yoast.
The diagnosis in the chat conversation checks these settings along with the rest. If everything is technically fine, you will hear it plainly: Google decides when and where the product appears in results. When the product is already visible but has an unclear title and description in the results, see the post on WooCommerce product SEO. We write more broadly about pages missing from search in WordPress site not showing in Google. When a product was deleted and its address returns an error, see the posts on a deleted WooCommerce product and 404 errors in WordPress. You will find the other guides on the blog.
Questions and answers
The product opens from its link, but it is not in the category. Why?
Most often its catalog visibility is set to “Hidden” or “Search results only”. The second common cause is a missing category: the product only landed in the default “Uncategorized” category. You change both on the product page, in the Publish box and in the Product categories box.
Does WooCommerce hide out-of-stock products by itself?
Only if you turn it on in the settings. The option to hide out-of-stock items is in WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Inventory and applies to the whole store at once. When it is on, products marked “Out of stock” disappear from the store's lists and search.
I added a product without a price. Is that a problem?
Yes, though a different one from it missing in the store. A simple product without a price usually shows, but has no add to cart button. A variable product where no variation has a price cannot be bought, and with out-of-stock hiding on it may disappear from the list.
All products disappeared at once. Where do I start?
With coming soon mode and the shop page. Check in WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility that the store is set to “Live”, then check that the right shop page is selected in the product settings. Only then look for the cause in a cache plugin or a recently installed plugin.
Will the free TellMyShop Free find the cause?
Yes, the visibility diagnosis works in TellMyShop Free, because it only reads the store. The chat checks status, catalog visibility, stock, price, categories, coming soon mode and the settings for Google, then points to the most likely cause. Fixes with a preview and undo are done in TellMyShop Pro.
