PrestaShop SEO guide: what to do, in order, to get your store seen in Google

PrestaShop SEO covers four areas of work: store settings, product and category content, tidy URLs, and the data Google uses to build a search result. You can do most of it in the admin and in Google Search Console. This guide puts the work in order and points you to detailed posts on each problem.

What affects a PrestaShop store's visibility in Google?

Four things that depend on you, and a few that don't. It's up to you whether Google can visit your pages and understands what they're about. It's also up to you whether URLs stay stable and product data is consistent. The algorithm, the pace of indexing and what your competitors do aren't up to you.

Google describes the basics in its SEO starter guide, and content in its guide to helpful content. PrestaShop's SEO-related settings are in the documentation on SEO and URLs. icomSEO has also put together a broad overview of the topics (in Polish).

Which guide to read for which problem

Each problem has its own post with instructions and an example. This table is the index.

In what order should you work on store SEO?

From what affects the whole store to what affects individual products.

  1. Review. Run an audit and list the problems. Without a list, it's easy to fix what you can see and skip what's doing harm.
  2. Settings. Friendly URLs, the 301 canonical redirect, SSL, debug mode off, an up-to-date sitemap.
  3. Indexing. Check in Search Console which pages Google skips and why.
  4. URLs and errors. Redirect URLs with traffic that return a 404. Change URLs rarely, and always with a 301.
  5. Google titles and descriptions. Duplicates first, then gaps, starting with products that sell.
  6. Content. Product descriptions in your own words, category texts, image descriptions.
  7. Structured data. One consistent block of product data with price and availability.

Then you go back to step one, every quarter and after every bigger change to the store.

What can't store settings fix?

A few things worth knowing before you pay anyone for SEO. You earn links from other sites outside your store. Speed depends largely on your hosting and theme. The decision about what to show in results always belongs to Google.

An honest SEO plan says what you'll fix in the store and what can't be promised. Better to hear that before you start than after six months. If someone guarantees first place in Google by a set date, ask for details of exactly what they'll do in your store.

How to measure SEO results

In Google Search Console, by comparing the same periods. The Performance report shows clicks, impressions and average position for queries and pages. Compare a month with the same month a year earlier, because stores have seasons. Lanterns sell differently in July than in November.

The Pages report also shows how many URLs Google has indexed and why it skipped the rest. Write down what you changed in the store and when. Without that note, after three months it's hard to say which fix worked. The module's change history records this automatically for changes made by the chat.

How a conversation with the chat helps

It takes the tedious part of the store work off your plate. You ask for a review, and your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) with the TellMyShop module reads settings, titles, descriptions, alt text, categories and 404 errors, then builds a plan starting with the most urgent. This review works in the free TellMyShop Free version, which only reads the store.

You: Do an SEO review and start with what affects the most pages.

Your chat: Two things affect the most pages. 118 products in Garden Lighting have no Google description, and 34 URLs with traffic return a 404 error. An example description fix:

I'll save the descriptions and redirects in TellMyShop Pro, each batch with a preview before saving.

Card status: waiting for your “yes”
change preview

old version: (empty)

new version: Lumo solar lamp, 60 cm, stainless steel. Switches on by itself at dusk and shines for up to 8 hours. (100 characters)

Illustration: products, numbers and replies are examples.

In TellMyShop Pro the chat writes titles and descriptions for up to 50 products in a batch. It also sets up redirects, up to 100 at once, and fixes image alt text. You see every save in a preview first, and you can undo most changes from the change history. The exception is a URL change, which is only reversed by another URL change.

The module doesn't handle orders, doesn't create product feeds for Google Merchant Center or price comparison sites, and won't speed up your hosting. It works on PrestaShop 8.1 and 9, and has a separate package for 1.7.8. Example requests are in the use cases a full SEO audit, Google titles and descriptions in a category and a plan for old URLs. Start with the free TellMyShop Free version, and you'll find the plans in the pricing.

Questions and answers

Is PrestaShop good for SEO?

Yes, if it's set up well. It has friendly URLs, title and description fields for Google on every product and category, a sitemap and redirects. Most problems come from settings, imports and modules, not from the platform itself. That's why SEO starts with a review of what's already in the store.

Do I need an SEO module to rank my store?

Not always. The basics, meaning URLs, titles, descriptions, the sitemap and redirects, are in PrestaShop itself. A module helps with work at scale or with features the admin doesn't have. Be careful with modules that add their own structured data, because they may duplicate the data from your theme.

How long before store SEO shows results?

Nobody can honestly give you a date. Google notices technical fixes on the crawler's next visits, and their pace depends on the store. Content and links work more slowly. Judge the effect in Search Console over months and compare the same periods, for example October with October.

What matters more: content or technical setup?

Technical setup first, because a wrong setting can block the whole store. Once Google can visit and index pages without obstacles, content decides. What counts is product and category descriptions and whether the store answers customers' questions. Good settings without content aren't enough, and nor is good content in a badly set up store.

Will the chat do my store's SEO for me?

No. The chat helps with the tedious part of the work in the store. It finds problems, writes titles, descriptions and alt text in batches, and sets up redirects. You see every save in a preview first and approve it yourself. The module won't change links from other sites, hosting speed or Google's decisions. Those stay with you.
