PrestaShop featured products: how to choose, order and swap products on the home page

PrestaShop featured products are a block on the home page that shows products from one category, usually the Home category. To change the products, you add them to that category or remove them from it. You set the number of products and the source category in the featured products module, and the order in the category itself.

From the category selected in the module settings. In a standard store this is done by the ps_featuredproducts module, which according to the module's description on Packagist picks one category and shows its products on the home page. By default that is the Home category, the root of the whole category tree.

So a product appears among the featured ones not because someone “featured” it, but because someone ticked Home in its categories. This often happens during an import or when copying a product that was already featured. Web Hosting Hub's help also has short instructions for adding and removing products from the block, though it describes an older admin.

The simplest way is through the product pages. With a few products it takes a moment.

  1. Open Catalog → Products and go into the product that should appear on the home page.
  2. In the categories section, tick Home. Don't change the default category if the product already has the right one.
  3. Save the product.
  4. Repeat for the products that should disappear from the block: untick Home.
  5. Go to Catalog → Categories, open the products of the Home category and drag them into the order you want them shown.
  6. Clear the cache in Advanced Parameters → Performance and check the home page in a private window.

If the block shows fewer products than you expect, check the number in the module settings. The PrestaShop team also has a test scenario for choosing the category, which shows where in the module you select the source category.

Which products are worth featuring?

The ones a customer will happily buy and that you can ship straight away. It sounds obvious, but in many stores the featured block is a list from the day the store opened.

  • In stock. An out-of-stock product on the home page is the customer's first disappointment.
  • Selling. Bestsellers from recent months, or new arrivals you want to show.
  • Varied. Several categories instead of eight versions of the same mug.
  • With good product pages. An image, name and short description that make people want to click.
  • Seasonal. The garden in spring, gifts before the holidays.

Change the featured products every so often, for example once a month or with each new delivery. A returning customer then sees something new, and you can check whether products from the home page sell better than before. Compare the same periods, because the season changes sales more than one block does.

A good practice is a separate category for featured products, for example Featured, hidden from the menu. Then Home stays the root of the tree, and you change featured products without the risk of someone mixing up the default category. You select that category in the module settings.

How is changing the products different from changing how the block looks?

Products are catalogue data, and the look is the theme. Swapping products touches no files. Changing the number of columns, the “new” label on cards or the button style needs a change to the module template in the theme, ideally in a child theme.

The order of blocks on the home page, for example featured above bestsellers, is a third matter. We describe it in the post on the PrestaShop home page layout. When the block looks the same after your changes, see the guide on why changes don't show in PrestaShop.

You write what should be on the home page, and your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) prepares the list and a preview of the assignments. It can take sales and stock into account, because it reads them from the store. The numbers in the example are illustrative.

You: Swap the featured products on the home page. Use the 8 best sellers from the last 90 days, only ones in stock, from different categories.

Your chat: The Home category currently has 12 products, 3 of them have no stock. I suggest:

I'll take 4 products out of Home, they will stay in their usual categories. I'll set the order by sales.

You: Fine, but put the Nora lantern first.

Your chat: I've corrected the order. I'll save it after your ‘yes’, and you can undo the change from the change history.

old version: Home: Fala mug, Fala mug XL, Fala mug mini, Len plate, (…) 12 products

new version: Home: Fala mug, Glina jug 1 l, Las bowl, Nora lantern, (…) 8 products

In the free TellMyShop Free the chat reads the Home category, stock and sales and suggests a new list, but saves nothing. In TellMyShop Pro, assigning products to categories and their order is the Catalogue area, which works straight after licence activation. Changing the module settings, for example the number of products, needs the Modules switch. A new look for the block and its place on the page need the Theme switch. You turn both on in the module panel for 24 hours, and they only work with a database backup made that day. A copy is made before every theme file change, so you can undo most changes.

Request examples: a new look for the featured products block and changing the order of blocks on the home page. Plan prices are on the pricing page, and other store guides on the blog.

Questions and answers

Why does the home page show old products?

Because the featured products block shows the products assigned to a chosen category, usually the Home category. Products added there when the store was set up stay in it until you remove them. Take the products you no longer want to show out of this category and add new ones.

Does removing a product from the Home category remove it from the store?

No. The product stays in its usual categories and keeps the same address. It only disappears from the block on the home page. If Home is its default category, choose a different one for it first.

How do I change the order of featured products?

The block shows products in the order of the category it takes them from. You change it in Catalog → Categories, in the product view of that category, by dragging them. If random display is turned on in the module settings, the order will be different every time.

Can I show products from another category as featured?

Yes. In the featured products module settings you choose the category the block takes products from. You can create a separate category, for example Spring picks, hide it from the menu and select it in the module. Changing this setting through the chat needs the Modules switch.

What will the free TellMyShop Free do with this?

It shows which products are in the Home category, whether any are disabled or out of stock and how many have sold. Based on that, the chat suggests a new list. Assigning products to the category is only saved by TellMyShop Pro, after a preview and your agreement.
