How to remove “Powered by PrestaShop” from the footer so the change survives updates
You can remove the “Powered by PrestaShop” text (in the Classic theme: “© 2026 - Ecommerce software by PrestaShop™”) in three ways: by changing the text's translation, by editing the theme's footer file, or by overriding the footer in a child theme. Only the translation and the child theme survive an update. A direct file edit disappears with the first theme update.

Where does this text in the footer come from?
From the theme's footer template. In the Classic theme it is the file templates/_partials/footer.tpl, which contains the copyright_link block with a link to the PrestaShop project site. The year in the text is inserted automatically, and the text goes through translations, which is why it can look different in shops in different languages.
Bought themes often have the footer somewhere else: in a separate text block module or in the theme settings in the admin. Before you start searching files, look through Design > Theme & Logo and the configuration of the footer modules. Shop owners have been asking about this on the PrestaShop forum for years, and the answers depend on the theme.
Which method should you choose?
| Method | What it changes | Survives updates | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Translating the text in the admin | the text only, the link stays | yes | when changing the text is enough, for example to the shop name |
Editing footer.tpl in the theme | everything | no | nobody, except for a quick test |
| Child theme with an overridden footer | everything | yes | when the text should go completely or you are changing more of the look |
| A copy of the module template in the theme | footer from a module | yes | when the text comes from a module, not the theme |
Editing the file directly in the theme is the method most often recommended in guides, because it is the shortest. It works until the first update. Then the file goes back to the theme author's version, and with it the text that nobody remembers having removed.
How do you change the text through translations?
This is the simplest route and needs no file access.
- In the admin, go to International > Translations.
- Choose the “Theme translations” type, your theme and the language.
- Search for the phrase “Ecommerce software by”.
- Enter your own text, for example the shop name, keeping the percent placeholders if you want to keep the year.
- Save and check the footer in a private browser window.
The link in the footer stays; only its text changes. If nothing changed after saving, the cache is to blame, which we cover in the article on changes not visible in PrestaShop.
How do you remove the footer in a child theme?
A child theme inherits everything from your theme and overrides only the files you change in it. PrestaShop even lets you override a single template block instead of the whole file. This is described in the child theme documentation, and in Polish by Biegun.Studio.
In practice: you create a child theme, and in it a footer file that extends the parent footer and overrides only the copyright_link block, empty or with your text. You enable the child theme in the admin and clear the cache. From then on, an update of the main theme won't touch your footer.
How do you get the footer changed without opening files?
You describe what the footer should say. Your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) checks where the text comes from: the theme, the translations or a module. If needed, it creates a child theme and changes the footer in it. Every file gets a backup before saving, and you see the change before it is saved.
You: I want the footer to say “© 2026 Lumo Lanterns” instead of the PrestaShop text. In a way that won't come back after an update.
Your chat: The text comes from the copyright_link block in the Classic theme's footer file. The shop has no child theme.
The year stays automatic. You will enable the child theme in the admin, under Design > Theme & Logo, and then I'll clear the cache.
I suggest creating a child theme called lumo and overriding only that block in it:
old version: © 2026 - Ecommerce software by PrestaShop™
new version: © 2026 Lumo Lanterns
Appearance changes work in TellMyShop Pro once you turn on the Theme switch. The switch lasts 24 hours and requires a database backup made the same day. You undo a file change from its backup. The change history does not undo creating the child theme: if you don't need it, you delete it in the admin.
Changing the footer sits on the “for the weekend” list for years, and with the chat it comes down to one request and one approval. Example requests: changing fixed text in a module window, an update-proof change to a module's look and protecting theme changes. You will find versions and prices in the pricing.
Questions and answers
Am I allowed to remove the PrestaShop text from the shop footer?
Removing this text from the footer is common practice and does not need PrestaShop's permission. The licence notices stay in the shop's source files, and you don't touch those. If you use a bought theme, also check its licence, because the theme author may have their own rules about the footer.
Why did the footer text come back after an update?
Because the change was made directly in a theme file, and the update overwrote that file with a new version. This applies both to the Classic theme when PrestaShop updates and to bought themes. Changes meant to last are made in a child theme or in translations.
Can I change the text without editing files?
Yes, in the Classic theme through translations: International, Translations, theme translations, then search for the phrase “Ecommerce software by”. That changes the text, but the link in the footer stays. To remove the element completely, you need a template change in a child theme.
What is a child theme and is it safe?
It is a separate, small theme that uses the files of your current theme and overrides only the ones you change. An update of the main theme does not touch your changes. After enabling the child theme, check the homepage, the product page and the cart, because it counts as a different theme in the shop settings.
Can the chat change the footer for me?
Yes, in TellMyShop Pro with the Theme switch on. You turn it on in the module panel for 24 hours, and it requires a database backup made the same day. The chat creates a child theme, changes the footer in it and copies the file before saving. You enable the child theme yourself in the admin.
