PrestaShop wholesale prices: how to show businesses different prices

You set PrestaShop wholesale prices through customer groups. You create a group, for example Wholesale, assign business accounts to it, then choose a method: a percentage discount for the whole group, a group discount on selected categories, specific prices on products or catalogue price rules. The customer sees the group prices only after logging in.

How do customer groups work in PrestaShop?

Every customer belongs to at least one group, and one of them is their default group. The default group decides which prices they see. PrestaShop has three built-in groups you cannot delete:

  • Visitor: anyone who is not logged in.
  • Guest: a customer who placed an order without creating an account.
  • Customer: every logged-in customer with an account.

You add your own groups in Shop Parameters → Customer Settings → Groups. A group has a name, a percentage discount, a price display method (with or without tax) and a setting for whether its members see prices at all. After saving, you can add group discounts on selected categories. Details are in the PrestaShop 8 customer groups documentation.

The same customer settings include B2B mode. It adds business fields to the account, but does not change prices by itself. MyPresta, in its article on selling B2B on PrestaShop, describes a typical setup: a new business account waits in a separate group and moves to the wholesale group once checked.

Which way of setting wholesale prices should you choose?

That depends on whether the discount for businesses is the same on everything or different per product.

Specific prices have a useful feature for wholesale: a quantity threshold. You can set a business to pay less from 10 units and even less from 50. The specific price fields, including the group and quantity threshold, are described in the developer documentation on specific prices.

How do you set up wholesale prices step by step?

  1. Work out your margin. Before giving businesses a discount, check your cost prices. A 20% discount on a product with a 25% margin leaves little. How to enter costs and work out margin is in the guide on the cost price in PrestaShop.
  2. Create the Wholesale group. Shop Parameters → Customer Settings → Groups. Choose to show prices excluding tax if that is how you bill businesses.
  3. Assign business accounts. On the customer's page, tick the Wholesale group and set it as the default.
  4. Set the discounts. Group discount, category discounts or specific prices, following the table above.
  5. Check on a test account. Create an account, add it to the Wholesale group, log in and compare prices with a normal customer's account. Check the cart, shipping and discount codes.
  6. Write down the rules. A short list: what discount, on what, from what quantity. In six months nobody will remember where a given price came from.

What are the traps with wholesale prices?

  • Prices do not combine the way you think. When a product has several specific prices, PrestaShop picks one according to its priorities. The group discount may additionally apply to the chosen price. Always check the result on a test account.
  • A promotion for everyone covers businesses too. A sale set for the group “All” can give businesses a lower price than you planned. More on category rules in the guide on a category sale.
  • Discount codes. A code for retail customers also works on a wholesale account, unless you restrict it to a group.
  • Hidden prices for guests. If you turn off price display for the Visitor group, Google and price comparison sites will not see prices either. In a mixed retail and wholesale store this is usually not done.

How do you set prices for the wholesale group in a conversation with the chat?

You create the group and assign businesses in the back office. Once the group exists, you can set its prices in a conversation. With the TellMyShop module your chat (Claude or ChatGPT) adds specific prices for a chosen group on products, including quantity thresholds, and catalogue price rules for the group on whole categories or brands. Before saving it shows the price before and after the discount.

You: For the Wholesale group: 15% off the whole Work Gloves category, no end date. Plus 20% off nitrile gloves 100 pcs from 10 boxes.

Your chat: Preview. A catalogue price rule for the Wholesale group, Work Gloves category with subcategories, 42 products, no end date. Example:

Note: the nitrile gloves are also covered by the category rule. PrestaShop will apply one price, check the result on a test account. Save? (yes / no)

old version: Latex-coated gloves: €12.99 incl. tax

new version: Latex-coated gloves for Wholesale: €11.04 incl. tax (−15%)

A specific price for the Wholesale group on Nitrile gloves 100 pcs, from 10 units:

old version: €36.90 incl. tax

new version: €29.52 incl. tax (−20%)

The numbers in this conversation are examples. The chat does not create customer groups, change their settings or assign customers to them. By default it also cannot see customers' personal data, so it will not check who is in the Wholesale group unless you turn on the customer data level in the panel yourself.

Prices and promotions belong to the Sales area. In TellMyShop Pro saving works once the Sales switch is on in the module panel, and it stays on until you turn it off. Every change has a preview, waits for your approval and goes into the change history, and you can undo most changes with one request. You will find ready requests built the same way in the use cases a promotion on a brand or category and a review of active promotions.

You can check how the chat reads your store without saving in TellMyShop Free. Pro plans with the Sales switch are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Does PrestaShop have wholesale prices without an extra module?

Yes, in a basic form. You create a customer group, for example Wholesale, assign business accounts to it and set a group discount or specific prices for the group. Modules only become useful for price lists from files, hiding prices from guests or invoice orders with a credit limit.

How do I assign a customer to the wholesale group?

In the back office, on the customer's page, you tick the group and set it as the default. The customer has to be logged in to see their group's prices. Guests and visitors who are not logged in see the normal prices.

Does PrestaShop's B2B mode set wholesale prices by itself?

No. B2B mode adds business fields to the customer account, for example the company name and VAT number. You still set prices for businesses through customer groups, discounts and specific prices.

Will a wholesale customer see prices excluding tax?

They can. In the group settings you choose whether its members see prices with or without tax. For businesses you usually choose prices excluding tax, but check what the cart and invoice look like then.

Will TellMyShop create a customer group and assign businesses to it?

No. You create groups and assign customers in the PrestaShop back office. TellMyShop Pro with the Sales switch sets specific prices and category promotions for an existing group, with a preview and undo.
