PrestaShop product not showing in the store? Check these 9 causes

A PrestaShop product is usually not showing in the store for one of nine reasons: it is disabled, has the wrong visibility, its category is inactive, guests cannot access the category, it is not assigned to the store, has a future availability date, a price of 0, or is missing from the search index or the filter index. Start with where exactly it is missing.

Where exactly is the product missing?

The answer decides which cause to check first. In PrestaShop “not showing” means three different things, and each has its own list of suspects. Open the store in a private browser window, without logging in, and check in turn: the product page at its address, the category list and the search.

SymptomMost common causeWhere to fix it
The product page returns a 404 or redirectsproduct disabled or not assigned to the storeCatalog > Products, the “Online” toggle
The page works, but it is not in the categorynot assigned to the category, “search only” visibility, filter index not refreshedproduct page, Description tab (categories) and Options tab (visibility), and the filter module
It is in the category, but search does not find itmissing from the search index, “catalog only” visibilityShop Parameters > Search
You see it when logged in, the customer does notcategory not available to the Guest or Visitor groupCatalog > Categories, group access
It disappears after a file importindexes not rebuilt, an empty name or friendly URL in one of the languagesimport and indexes

The last row is a story of its own. A CSV import skips some of what a normal save in the admin does, so it is worth rebuilding both indexes after every import.

In what order should you check the causes?

From the simplest to the most hidden. This order comes from how often each cause happens and how many clicks it takes to check.

  1. Is the product enabled? The “Online” toggle on the product page. A disabled product shows a 404 or a redirect at its address, depending on the settings.
  2. What is the visibility? In the product options: everywhere, catalog only, search only or nowhere. “Nowhere” is sometimes set during an import and then forgotten.
  3. Is the category active, along with its parents? A product in an active subcategory of an inactive main category will not appear in the menu or the list.
  4. Do guests have access to the category? When you edit a category there is a list of customer groups. If the Guest group is not ticked, a customer who is not logged in will not see the category.
  5. Is the product assigned to this store? This only applies in multistore mode, but there it is a common cause.
  6. Is the availability date in the future? A product with an “available from” date may behave differently from the others, depending on the theme.
  7. Is the price 0? Some themes and modules hide such products or block adding them to the cart.
  8. Is the product in the search index? Shop Parameters > Search shows how many products are indexed. A lower number than in the catalogue means a backlog.
  9. Is the filter index up to date? If category lists are handled by the faceted navigation module, the product must also be in its index.

The PrestaShop documentation describes search settings and managing categories, including customer group access.

Why doesn't search find a product that is in the store?

Because PrestaShop search does not search the catalogue live. It uses its own word index, built when a product is saved. When a product reached the store without that step, for example through an import or a wholesaler module, it is not in the index.

The second common cause is the phrase itself. Search splits text into words and treats short words and characters, such as hyphens in product codes, in its own way. A customer types “AB-120”, and the index knows “AB” and “120” separately. Pro-Link covers this case well in its guide to search (in Polish), and dhosting shows how to trigger reindexing (also in Polish).

The category list and search are two separate mechanisms. That is why a product can be visible in a category and absent from search results, or the other way round. You fix each one separately. The full search fix, with an index rebuild, is described in the post PrestaShop search not working.

How to check it in one conversation with the chat

You give the product name or code, and the chat checks the first eight points at once. You check the filter index yourself in the filter module. The result is a checklist with the most likely cause marked and the place in the admin where you fix it. The diagnosis only reads store data, so it works in TellMyShop Free and changes nothing.

You: A customer says she can't find the Lumo 30 cm lantern. I can see it in the admin. Check why it isn't showing.

Your chat: I checked the product Lumo 30 cm (ID 412). It is enabled, visible everywhere, has 14 in stock and a price of €89 including VAT.

The problem is in the category: Lanterns is active, but its parent category Decorations is disabled. That is why the product does not appear in the list or the menu.

Search will not find it either, because it is not in the index. It probably came from an import.

You can enable the Decorations category in Catalog > Categories and add the missing products to the index in Shop Parameters > Search.

In TellMyShop Pro the same conversation can move on to the fix: the chat prepares the change, shows it in a preview and saves it only after you agree. You can undo most such changes from the change history. Changes to prices and stock also need the Sales switch. You will find ready request examples in the use cases product not showing in a category and search does not find a product.

What to do when the problem affects many products at once

Look for a shared cause before you start fixing products one by one. When dozens of products disappear at the same time, it is rarely about each one separately. Usually one of three shared elements is to blame: a disabled parent category, an import that set the wrong visibility, or an index that was not refreshed.

If products disappeared from category lists after an import or a theme change, also read the post on filters that don't work, because category lists and filters use the same index. And if you disabled a product on purpose and want to keep its traffic from Google, see the article on 404 errors.

Before you connect your store to the chat, you can see how it works step by step. TellMyShop runs on PrestaShop 8.1 and newer, including version 9. Works with Claude or ChatGPT, including free accounts.

Questions and answers

Why is the product in the admin but not in the store?

Most often the product is disabled, its visibility is set to “nowhere” or its category is inactive. Less often the culprit is a customer group with no access to the category, a future availability date or assignment to another store in multistore mode. Check in this order, because the first three causes account for most cases.

The product shows when I open its link, but not in the category list. What does that mean?

The product page works, so the product itself is active. The problem is in the category list: the product is not assigned to it, its visibility is “search only”, or the category list uses the filter module index, which was not refreshed after an import. Rebuilding the filter index usually fixes it.

Is the free TellMyShop Free enough for this diagnosis?

Yes. Diagnosing product visibility only reads store data, so it works in the free TellMyShop Free. The chat points to the cause and the place in the admin where you fix it. You then make the fix by hand or, in TellMyShop Pro, in the same conversation with a preview before saving.

Does a product with no stock disappear from the store?

PrestaShop itself does not hide it. A product with no stock stays visible, and what happens depends on the setting for orders when out of stock. It can be hidden by a filter module with an option to show only available products, by the theme or by an extra module. Then look in their settings, not on the product page.
